Sikkim’s Pakyong Sub-Division Faces Challenges from Heavy Rainfall and Landslides

Northeast Desk, 29th September: Pakyong Sub-Division in Sikkim is currently grappling with the aftermath of significant rainfall, which has led to various natural disasters in recent days. Landslides have been reported in several areas, including Barapathing and Aho, prompting local authorities to initiate continuous assessments to mitigate future risks.

Transportation in the region has been heavily impacted, with severe blockages affecting PMGSY Roads, particularly between Chandu Pool and Chettri Goan, as well as from Saureni to LLHP. Although efforts are underway to restore access and many roads have been cleared, certain sections remain susceptible to further landslides due to unstable conditions. Local authorities are working closely with relevant departments to effectively address these ongoing challenges, while providing timely updates on weather forecasts and advisories to the community.

Residents are urged to report any signs of damage or unusual environmental changes to facilitate prompt interventions. In addition, officials are distributing materials and resources to strengthen homes in vulnerable areas, enhancing the community’s resilience against future natural calamities.

While there have been no reports of homes being completely destroyed, minor property damage has been documented in villages near landslide-prone areas. Water pipes and electrical poles have also sustained minor damage, resulting in minimal losses. Residents in these affected zones are advised to remain vigilant and prepared as adverse weather conditions continue to pose risks.

The local administration is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents as they navigate these challenging circumstances, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in reporting issues and staying informed about weather conditions.
