Sikkim’s Rainfall Variability: IMD Reports Significant Fluctuations

Northeast Desk, 26th September: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released data on September 26, 2024, highlighting significant variability in Sikkim’s rainfall patterns during the monsoon season. The state’s districts have experienced a mix of increased precipitation and areas with below-normal rainfall.

  • *Soreng District: Recorded the highest rainfall, with *78.0 mm in the last 24 hours. Its cumulative rainfall since June 1 now stands at *2,077.0 mm, an *18% increase over the seasonal norm, making it the focal point of Sikkim’s heightened monsoon activity.
  • *Overall Rainfall in Sikkim: The state experienced an average of *45.7 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, totaling 1,843.2 mm since June 1. This reflects a 12% excess above expected levels.
  • *Mangan District: Received *25.3 mm of rainfall, totaling 1,820.3 mm for the season, which is 20% above normal.
  • *Gangtok: Faced a deficiency with *30.7 mm of rainfall, bringing its total to *1,892.2 mm, which is *11% below normal.
  • *Pakyong: Recorded *64.3 mm of rainfall in the last day, with a seasonal total of *1,512.4 mm, *4% below normal.
  • *Gyalshing: Accumulated *24.5 mm in the past 24 hours, totaling *1,992.7 mm, which is *13% above normal.
  • *Namchi: Received *51.6 mm of rainfall, bringing its total to *1,664.5 mm, which is just *1% above normal.

As Sikkim progresses through its monsoon season, the disparities in rainfall across districts underscore the region’s unpredictable weather patterns, with certain areas notably exceeding seasonal expectations while others remain below normal.
