Silchar Resident Becomes First in Assam to Receive Citizenship Under CAA

Guwahati, 14th August: In a landmark achievement, Dulon Das, a 50-year-old resident of Silchar, has become the first person in Assam to receive Indian citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). The Union Home Ministry notified Das of his successful application on August 13, 2024, bringing an end to his decades-long wait for citizenship.

Das’s journey to citizenship began in 1988 when his family migrated from Bangladesh’s Sylhet region to Silchar due to repeated attacks. Despite living in India for over three decades, Das and his family were unable to establish their citizenship through the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process. The CAA, which fast-tracks citizenship for non-Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, provided a new avenue for Das to secure his status.

Das’s application, submitted on April 1, 2024, was one of eight received across Assam under the CAA. His successful application marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the controversial act, potentially paving the way for more applications from eligible individuals in the region.
