Six Assam Police Personnel Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Murder

Guwahati, 27th June: In a significant legal development, six police personnel from Assam have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Tinsukia District and Sessions Court for their involvement in the murder of a civilian over a decade ago.

The incident dates back to October 7, 2013, at Ambikapur market in Tinsukia district, where Ajit Sonowal was brutally beaten by the accused police officers. Following the assault, Sonowal was immediately admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh for treatment but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Sonowal’s father filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Sadiya Police Station on October 9, 2013, which initiated the legal proceedings against the accused officers. After a meticulous investigation and subsequent trial in the Tinsukia District and Sessions Court, the court found sufficient evidence, including witness testimonies and arguments presented by government advocate Ashok Chaudhary, to convict the six police personnel under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

District and Sessions Judge Dipankar Bora delivered the verdict, sentencing all six officers to life imprisonment for their role in the unlawful killing of Ajit Sonowal. The sentencing marks a significant moment in the pursuit of justice and accountability within law enforcement, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights.

The case underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in policing and highlights the consequences of abuse of power. The court’s decision is expected to set a precedent for ensuring that such incidents are thoroughly investigated and perpetrators are held accountable under the law.
