Six New University Bills Introduced in Assam Legislative Assembly

Guwahati, 12th September: On the first day of the autumn session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu introduced six new university bills for colleges in the state. These bills seek to establish universities for Sibsagar College (Autonomous), Gurucharan College, Bongaigaon College, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), Nowgong College (Autonomous), and Jagannath Borooah College (Autonomous).

Additionally, amendment bills for seven existing universities were introduced in the assembly. These universities include Gauhati University, Cotton University, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Madhabdev University, Assam Women’s University, Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU), and Bodoland University.

Furthermore, a repealing bill was presented for Assam Rajib Gandhi University of Cooperative Management. Following the enactment of this bill, all properties belonging to Assam Rajib Gandhi University of Cooperative Management will be transferred to Sibsagar University.

Moreover, officers and staff occupying sanctioned positions at Assam Rajib Gandhi University of Cooperative Management will be placed in Sibsagar University for the remaining duration of their service as specified in the Sibsagar University Act, 2023.

In addition, the Vice-Chancellor of Rajib Gandhi University will assume the role of Advisor of Higher Education Department, Government of Assam, for the remainder of his term in office, retaining his existing pay and allowances as the Vice-Chancellor of the Rajib Gandhi University of Cooperative Management.
