Smuggled from Myanmar, Critically endangered orangutan rescued in Mizoram’s Aizawal
Northeast Desk, 12th October: The customs department in Mizoram on October 11 undertook a critical rescue mission, saving a highly endangered baby orangutan in Seling village, situated within the Aizawl district.
Reports suggest that this vulnerable baby orangutan may have been illegally transported from Myanmar.
The customs department officials successfully intercepted a vehicle suspected of originating from Myanmar and managed to rescue the primate.
The driver of the vehicle has been apprehended for further investigation.
The rescued orangutan has been entrusted to the care of the forest department, while necessary legal proceedings have been initiated against the detained individual.
It’s important to highlight that orangutans are remarkable great apes that are native to the lush rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia.
Unfortunately, their population has dwindled to the extent that they can now only be found in certain regions of Borneo and Sumatra. These magnificent creatures are classified as critically endangered species, emphasizing the urgency of protecting their dwindling populations.
