Soreng Police Nab Alleged Drug Peddler in Timely Bust
Soreng, June 21: In a significant stride against the ongoing war on drugs, Soreng police on Friday successfully apprehended a man suspected of possessing contraband substances. Akhil Akhtar, a resident of Islampur currently residing in Daragoan, was intercepted following a tip-off, leading to the recovery of suspected brown sugar.
Acting on credible intelligence, a team from Soreng police lay in wait for a Siliguri-to-Soreng daily taxi (Spacio SK02J/0424) at Church Fatak, near Bhir Dara, Soreng. At approximately 4 PM, the vehicle was intercepted. A thorough search conducted by the vigilant officers led to the discovery of a black plastic pouch in Akhtar’s possession. The pouch contained a mud-coloured substance, strongly suspected to be brown sugar, weighing 8.33 grams. The illicit substance was immediately seized.
Following the apprehension and seizure, a case has been registered against Akhtar under pertinent sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Police sources revealed that Akhtar, who works as a tailor, had been under surveillance for a period, with this arrest being a culmination of Soreng District Police’s sustained anti-drug operations.
