Speaker Thomas A Sangma Inspects New Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Building, Calls for Green Spaces and Heritage Display

Northeast Desk, 20th September: Speaker Thomas A Sangma on September 19 conducted an inspection of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building under construction at Mawdiangdiang. The visit aimed to evaluate progress and address any delays to ensure the project’s timely completion.

During the inspection, Sangma stressed the importance of integrating green spaces into the design of the Assembly premises. He called on the Forest and Horticulture Departments to contribute to making the complex as eco-friendly as possible. “The entire premises of this complex should be made green,” Sangma emphasized.

In addition to environmental considerations, Sangma directed the Arts and Culture Department to design the interiors to reflect Meghalaya’s rich heritage. The plans include showcasing the state’s history in the reception area and highlighting the 51-year journey of the Legislative Assembly on the ground floor.

While expressing overall satisfaction with the progress, Sangma acknowledged some delays. “The earlier timeline was set for September 30, but we are behind schedule. They may need about one more month to complete it,” he said. The delays were previously caused by workforce shortages, but Sangma confirmed that the situation had improved with more workers now on-site.

The inspection was attended by officials from multiple departments and the Assembly Secretariat, including Dr. Andrew Simons, Commissioner & Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
