Spike in Unnatural Deaths and Crime Incidents in Sikkim Triggers Heightened Police Response

Gangtok, SikkimAn alarming increase in reports of unnatural deaths and criminal incidents in Sikkim has prompted a series of police investigations and an urgent call for public awareness, according to local authorities. These incidents, which occurred in Gangtok, Rangpo, and Yangang, are under scrutiny as officials work to address the factors contributing to these recent events.

On November 2, Sadar Police Station in Gangtok registered a high-profile case of burglary, marking the beginning of a busy week for the force. According to FIR No. 160/2024, unknown assailants broke into the home of Menuka Rai, making off with gold ornaments valued at Rs 595,000 and Rs 3,000 in cash. In response, Sikkim Police have detained two suspects under the BNSS 2023 legislation. The authorities have intensified their investigation as they work to identify and bring those responsible to justice.

Meanwhile, a separate case emerged in Rangpo, where police reported the sudden death of 70-year-old Uttam Kumar Rawat. Found near a public restroom, Rawat’s body showed no external injuries, but preliminary findings indicated he had a history of chronic alcoholism. Police, ruling out foul play, have preserved the body for a detailed examination to confirm the cause of death.

The following day, November 3, police in Gangtok were once again called into action as they investigated an apparent suicide case. Registered as FIR No. 90/2024, the case involved the death of 44-year-old Passang Doma Tamang, who was discovered hanging in her rented room. Police are now conducting an in-depth investigation, exploring any potential circumstances that may have contributed to this tragedy.

In Yangang, another unexpected death added to the week’s incidents. Police responded to reports involving 35-year-old Bimla Devi Shanker, who was discovered unconscious in a water container outside her residence. Witnesses stated that Shanker had been living with epilepsy and had a history of alcoholism. Despite these indicators, police have preserved her body for a post-mortem examination to accurately determine the cause of death.

The recent spate of incidents has sparked concern across Sikkim. Local authorities are working to address public safety concerns, while highlighting the importance of mental health support and substance abuse awareness. This surge in cases has prompted calls for community vigilance and strengthened support systems to help prevent such incidents in the future.
