Sprinter Hima Das Qualifies for Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 200m Event

Guwahati: Hima Das, a sprinter from Assam, has qualified for the 200 m event of the upcoming Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Hima Das has qualified for the 4×100 m relay race at the 2022 Commonwealth Games along with champion sprinter Dutee Chand, Srabani Nanda, MV Jilna, NS Simi, and S Dhanalakshmi.

Das first gained notoriety in July 2018 when she won the title of Women’s 400m World U-20 Champion after winning the competition at the World U-20 Championships in Finland, three months after making her Commonwealth Games debut. With a time of 50.79 seconds, she set the current Indian record for the 400 metres at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Her inability to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 was one of the worst setbacks of her career. During the pandemic, she even had a near-death experience. She nevertheless made a powerful recovery despite the unfortunate circumstances. She returned to the track in spectacular fashion this year, taking home the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter race at the 61st National Interstate Athletics Championships.
