In a landmark decision poised to revolutionize film education in India, the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), and the Film and Television Institute of India’s Northeast campus situated in Jote, Arunachal Pradesh, have been officially conferred the prestigious Deemed University status. This significant recognition comes under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act of 1956, marking a pivotal moment for these esteemed institutions.
The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, warmly welcomed this development, highlighting the vast array of opportunities it unlocks for aspiring filmmakers and students, particularly within the Northeast region. The newly granted status empowers these institutes to award UGC-recognized degrees, a crucial step forward that includes the introduction of Master’s level programs. Furthermore, the academic landscape for students will broaden considerably with the imminent availability of PhD and comprehensive research programs.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of this achievement is the establishment of credit transfer and exchange programs with both national and international universities.
