SRFTI, FTII, and FTII Northeast Achieve Deemed University Status, Ushering in New Era for Indian Cinema Education
In a landmark decision poised to revolutionize film education in India, the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), and the Film and Television Institute of India’s Northeast campus situated in Jote, Arunachal Pradesh, have been officially conferred the prestigious Deemed University status. This significant recognition comes under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act of 1956, marking a pivotal moment for these esteemed institutions.
The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, warmly welcomed this development, highlighting the vast array of opportunities it unlocks for aspiring filmmakers and students, particularly within the Northeast region. The newly granted status empowers these institutes to award UGC-recognized degrees, a crucial step forward that includes the introduction of Master’s level programs. Furthermore, the academic landscape for students will broaden considerably with the imminent availability of PhD and comprehensive research programs.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of this achievement is the establishment of credit transfer and exchange programs with both national and international universities. This initiative promises to provide students with invaluable global exposure and diverse learning experiences, enriching their academic journeys and broadening their perspectives.
Beyond academic program enhancements, students at these now Deemed Universities will gain enhanced eligibility for pursuing higher education, securing academic positions, accessing educational loans, and benefiting from various subsidies. These provisions are set to further empower students in their academic and professional endeavors.
Aligning with the progressive vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the FTII Northeast campus at Jote will also introduce undergraduate programs. This strategic move underscores the growing prominence of the Northeast as a central nucleus for the future of cinematic education across India.
Expressing his profound optimism, Chief Minister Pema Khandu remarked, “The future of Indian cinema education just got brighter — and the Northeast is now at the heart of this cinematic revolution.” The conferment of Deemed University status represents a substantial stride towards elevating the overall quality of film education in the nation and firmly establishes the Northeast as an increasingly vital center for the burgeoning creative industries.
