Sri Lanka in Talks with Russia over Purchase of Fuel

Guwahati: Sri Lanka’s Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera stated that his country is in talks with Russia about buying petroleum despite the country’s ongoing political instability.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Wijesekera lauded the Indian government for giving a credit line for purchasing fuel.

“We have sent inquiries to various nations for fuel. So, we are grateful to any nation that comes to aid us. Currently, the only nation that has granted us a credit line is the Indian government ” said Wijesekera.

“Moreover, we are in conversation with the Russian government. The first meetings were held in Russia. We have stated our demands and are already working on it. We’re waiting to learn what kind of amenities Sri Lanka will receive “Added he.

In addition, Wijesekara unveiled the “National Fuel Pass” programme, which rations fuel. The weekly allocation of gasoline quota is guaranteed under the new pass. Once the Vehicle Identification Number and other information have been confirmed, a QR code will be sent for each National Identity Card number (NIC).

The last digit of each registered vehicle’s registration number will determine who gets to go first. Tourists and foreigners would be given preference to purchase fuel in Colombo despite the ongoing fuel crisis.
