Sri Lanka PM Ranil Wickremesinghe Appointed as Acting President
Guwahati: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as acting president on Friday, taking over for Gotabaya Rajapaksa who fled to Singapore after months of unrest over the country’s economic crisis.
73-year-old Wickremesinghe took the oath of office in front of chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
Rajapaksa’s official resignation on Friday morning put an end to the uncertainty that had existed since the universally disliked leader left the island after being driven from office by fierce public outcry over a dire economic catastrophe.
