Sri Lankan Protesters Find Huge Sum of Money in President’s Mansion amid Economic Crisis

Guwahati: The protesters who broke into Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence on Saturday said that they have recovered a huge amount of cash there.

According to reports, the seized money was given to the security teams.

Several dramatic footages have been making the rounds on social media following the unrest on Saturday where thousands of protestors surrounded his official mansion in Colombo’s capital city and forced him to flee to an unidentified location.

They stormed into President Rajapaksa’s home with the demand for his resignation, smashed police-erected security barriers, dove into the pool, and ransacked his kitchen and residence.

A video depicting on social media showing the protesters counting the discovered cash bills is being circulated.

Additionally, protestors from Sri Lanka broke into and set fire to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence. Police resorted to water cannons to stop the enraged protestors.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe declared on Saturday that he will step down from his position to guarantee the survival of the government and the security of all citizens.

Wickremesinghe tweeted, “To ensure the continuation of the Government including the safety of all citizens I accept the best recommendation of the Party Leaders today, to make way for an All-Party Government. To facilitate this I will resign as Prime Minister.”
