Study for Revival of Dumbur Hydroelectric Project in Tripura After September Floods

Agartala: A six-member team from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Ltd recently conducted a study for the revival of the Dumbur hydroelectric project in Tripura’s Gomati district, an official confirmed on December 30. The study follows significant damage to the project due to the devastating floods in September.

The Dumbur hydroelectric project, which has been operational since 1984, suffered extensive damage during the unprecedented flooding. Bishwajit Bose, Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation (TSECL), stated that NHPC was engaged as a consultant for the revival of the plant, which has been out of service since the flood.

The NHPC team carried out a detailed three-day study on the plant’s current condition, assessing the pros and cons of its potential revival. Bose mentioned that TSECL is awaiting the Detailed Project Report (DPR) from NHPC, which will outline the revival plan, including proposals for increasing the power generation capacity of the facility.

Bose emphasized the importance of the Dumbur hydroelectric plant, noting that its revival would contribute significantly to meeting the state’s Renewable Power Obligation (RPO). The facility, if revived to produce 15 MW of power daily, would also offer an economically viable alternative to gas-based power plants. While the per-unit cost of electricity at the Dumbur plant stands at Rs 3.86, the cost in gas-based plants is approximately Rs 5.90 per unit.

Once the DPR is received, the state government will make a final decision on the revival plan for the hydroelectric project.
