Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Shamima Jahan and Yarenjungla Longkumer for Gauhati High Court Judgeship
National Desk, 5th Jan: The Supreme Court Collegium has put forth the names of Shamima Jahan, Advocate, and Yarenjungla Longkumer, Judicial Officer, for appointment as Judges of the Gauhati High Court. The unanimous decision follows a meticulous evaluation process, including scrutiny, consultation, and thorough consideration of opinions from consultee-colleagues and the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
The recommendation, originating from the Gauhati High Court Collegium on May 29, 2023, faced a brief deferral on October 17, 2023, to obtain a comprehensive report. The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, in consultation with members of the High Court Collegium, responded with minutes of assessments on October 19, 2023, and November 7, 2023. Judges of the Supreme Court familiar with the Gauhati High Court were also consulted in adherence to the Memorandum of Procedure.
The Collegium, consisting of Chief Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and Justice B. R. Gavai, has reached a unanimous decision, deeming Ms. Shamima Jahan and Ms. Yarenjungla Longkumer highly suitable for Judgeship at the Gauhati High Court. The resolution, dated January 4, 2024, formally recommends their appointment, with inter se seniority determined as per existing practice.
