Supreme Court Enforces Nationwide Ban on Firecrackers Ahead of Diwali
National Desk, 7th November: In anticipation of the Diwali festival, the Supreme Court of India has taken a decisive step by instituting a nationwide ban on the sale and use of firecrackers. This ruling goes beyond the confines of Delhi-NCR, applying to the entire country.
The Supreme Court’s decision is a response to mounting concerns over alarmingly high pollution levels, a declining air quality index (AQI), and the lack of clear regulations to delineate noise pollution levels.
The supreme court has emphasized that the judiciary is not the only branch with duty for preventing pollution, even as it reiterates the prohibition on firecrackers. The court declared unequivocally, “There is a false impression that courts have a duty when it comes to pollution. However, it is everyone’s responsibility.”
This crucial move underscores the necessity for collective efforts in curbing pollution and underscores the role of every citizen in protecting the environment and public health. It emphasizes that promoting cleaner air is a shared responsibility that transcends legal institutions.
It is worth noting that this nationwide ban on firecrackers does not constitute a blanket prohibition. Instead, it specifically targets items containing barium salts. This focused approach allows for a more nuanced regulation that takes into account the environmental and health impact of specific types of firecrackers.
The Supreme Court’s decision comes amid growing concerns about the environmental and health effects of fireworks, which often lead to a significant deterioration of air quality and contribute to noise pollution. The ruling aligns with broader efforts to mitigate pollution and improve the overall well-being of citizens, especially during festive seasons like Diwali.
