Supreme Court Judges Offer Hope to Manipur’s Internally Displaced Persons

Imphal: A team of Supreme Court judges, led by Justice B R Gavai, visited Manipur’s strife-torn Churachandpur district on March 22, offering words of hope to internally displaced persons affected by ethnic violence. The judges assured the displaced individuals that “peace will return to the state soon”.

During their visit, the team virtually inaugurated a legal services camp, a medical camp, and a legal aid clinic from the Mini Secretariat at Lamka in the district. They also interacted with the internally displaced persons at the Sadbhavana Mandap relief centre. Justice Gavai emphasized the importance of faith in the constitution, stating that it will ensure peace returns to the state.

However, Justice N Kotiswar Singh, part of the delegation and a member of the Meitei community, did not visit the Kuki-majority Churachandpur district due to objections from a local lawyers’ body. Instead, he will visit Bishnupur district. The All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) has urged its Churachandpur district counterpart to withdraw its directive preventing a Meitei Supreme Court judge from visiting the Kuki-Zo-dominated area.
