Supreme Court Rebukes Baba Ramdev, Demands Public Apology Over Misleading Advertisements
National Desk, 16th April: The Supreme Court reprimanded Baba Ramdev during a contempt case hearing against Patanjali Ayurved for misleading advertisements of its medicinal products.
Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah criticized Ramdev’s “not so innocent” conduct and expressed disapproval of his “irresponsible behavior”. They scheduled the next hearing for April 23.
Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna were directed to issue a public apology within one week. Despite Ramdev’s “unconditional apology”, the bench emphasized that “law is equal for everyone” and questioned their advertising practices concerning incurable diseases.
The court will deliberate on whether to accept the apology. Previously, on April 10, the Supreme Court dismissed Ramdev and Balkrishna’s apology, citing “wilful, deliberate, and repeated violations” of court orders.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has filed a petition against Patanjali Ayurved. Additionally, the Uttarakhand government faced criticism from the court for issuing a license for Patanjali products, with Justice Amanullah threatening severe action.
