Supreme Court Seeks Assam Government and Centre’s Response on Deportation Plan for 211 Foreign Nationals
National Desk, 10th September: The Supreme Court has requested responses from the Assam State Government and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the deportation of 211 declared foreign nationals currently held in a transit camp in Assam’s Goalpara district. Of these, 66 are reported to be from Bangladesh. The Court’s inquiry follows a report from the Assam District Legal Services Authority, which highlighted poor living conditions in the detention camps.
A bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Augustine George Masih, hearing a petition on detention camp conditions, described the situation as “deplorable” due to inadequate water supply, poor sanitation, and leaking restrooms. The Court directed the State to submit an affidavit in response and urged the Union and State Governments to coordinate on the deportation process.
Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing the petitioners, highlighted delays in the deportation process, while the Additional Solicitor General assured that illegal immigrants would be deported. The matter continues, with a focus on the legal and diplomatic challenges of verifying the nationality of those detained.
