Supreme Court Takes Stern Action in Manipur Naked Parade Case
National Desk, 31st July: The Supreme Court of India expressed its grave concern over the distressing video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur. The court deemed the incident “horrendous” and demanded information on the actions taken by the police after FIRs were lodged regarding the incident.
Expressing doubt over the state police’s handling of the matter, the apex court conveyed its unwillingness to let them probe the case further. Instead, the court may constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or a committee comprising former judges to oversee the situation in Manipur.
During the proceedings, the bench raised questions about the delay in registering the FIRs and sought clarification from the Manipur police about their handling of the case. Additionally, the court called for a comprehensive mechanism to address violence against women and requested details of ‘zero FIRs’ registered in the state.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that the Centre has no objections to the Supreme Court monitoring the investigation to ensure justice prevails.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the two women featured in the video, informed the court that they have filed a petition seeking justice and accountability.
Earlier, taking cognizance of the disturbing video, the Supreme Court directed the Centre and Manipur government to take immediate remedial, rehabilitative, and preventive measures. Subsequently, the Centre transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and requested the trial to be conducted outside Manipur for a time-bound conclusion.
In the wake of public outrage and nationwide concern for the safety of women, the Manipur police have made significant progress, arresting seven individuals in connection with the case so far.
As the case unfolds, the nation watches closely, hoping that justice will be served, and strict measures will be taken to prevent such heinous incidents from occurring in the future.
