Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case

National Desk, 18th August:The Supreme Court has initiated suo motu proceedings regarding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is set to hear the case on Tuesday, August 20.

The victim’s body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room on August 9. The Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer the following day. However, due to dissatisfaction with the local police investigation, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case on August 13.

The High Court expressed concern about the investigation’s progress, noting the initial registration of the case as an unnatural death and the failure of the hospital principal to file a complaint. The bench cited apprehensions from the victim’s parents that the investigation might be derailed and evidence could be destroyed if not handled properly.

The case has ignited widespread protests, including vandalism at RG Kar Hospital on August 14. The High Court recently criticized the West Bengal government for its inadequate measures to prevent such acts of destruction.
