Surajit Gogoi Honoured for Cracking ₹870 Crore GST Evasion Racket, Bringing National Spotlight to Northeast Enforcement Excellence
Guwahati: Surajit Gogoi, a Superintendent with the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) in Guwahati, has been awarded a Commendation Certificate for his pivotal role in busting one of the country’s largest tax evasion networks, earning national recognition during the 8th GST Day celebrations in New Delhi.
The award was conferred at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan in the presence of Revenue Secretary Arvind Shrivastava and CBIC Chairman Sanjay Kumar Agarwal. Gogoi’s investigation uncovered a sprawling fake invoicing and shell firm operation that is estimated to have cost the national exchequer ₹870 crore in GST revenue. His team’s efforts led to an unprecedented recovery of ₹430 crore—making it one of the most significant enforcement milestones in the recent history of GST intelligence operations.
The crackdown also resulted in the arrest of five key operatives and exposed a sophisticated criminal nexus that exploited forged documents, stolen business credentials, and layers of fraudulent firms to mask their activities. Officials described the network as one of the most structurally complex and damaging to India’s indirect tax system uncovered so far.
Gogoi’s success has not only elevated national standards of compliance monitoring and fraud detection but also marked a moment of pride for the Northeast. His commendation is being widely viewed as a testament to the rising prominence of officers from the region in shaping India’s financial enforcement landscape.
A senior official from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) remarked, “Gogoi’s integrity and strategic acumen have not only helped plug revenue leaks but also reinforced public confidence in the tax system. His work sets a new benchmark for investigative excellence.”
The recognition comes at a time when the government is increasingly relying on technology-backed intelligence and high-impact enforcement to curb tax evasion. Gogoi’s contribution, with its blend of field precision and strategic insight, is being hailed as a model for future operations.
