Suspected ULFA militant killed in encounter in Assam’s Kakopathar

Guwahati: A suspected ULFA (I) militant was killed during an encounter with a joint police and army team in Tinsukia district of Assam on Friday.

The incident took place at Mazgaon area in Kakopathar of the district.

The deceased ULFA (I) rebel has been identified as Gyan Asom.

He was killed after a fierce gunfight at Kakopathar between a six-person ULFA (I) rebel team and Indian Army soldiers.

The security forces launched an operation based on specific information that a six-person ULFA (I) squad was seeking refuge at a home in the Dapather Majgaon village, which is within the jurisdiction of the Kakopathar police station in the district.

The ULFA-I team was led by the dreaded commander of the banned outfit Rupom Asom. The ULFA (I) team also comprised Rinku Asom, Mriganka Asom and Uday Asom besides Gyan Asom.

According to reports, the security crew reportedly came under heavy fire as soon as they arrived at the property. Two grenades were also thrown by the ULFA (I) unit in the direction of the security personnel.

Reportedly, the Indian Army forces retaliated, killing ULFA (I) cadre Gyan Asom.

Moreover, another ULFA-I cadre, identified as Rinku Asom has sustained a bullet injury.

The remaining ULFA (I) rebels left two bags containing grenades behind as they fled the area of the fight.
