Suspended Police Official Rumi Timungpi Appears Before SIT in APSC Scam
Guwahati, 18th December: In a significant development in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scandal, Rumi Timungpi, a suspended police official, is set to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) today. Timungpi, who was the suspended Additional Superintendent of Police, allegedly failed to clear the APSC mains exam, falling short of the required cut-off marks.
Reports suggest that Timungpi, belonging to the ST (Hills) caste, obtained 558 marks against a cut-off of 631. Allegations have surfaced that, with the assistance of then APSC chairman Rakesh Pal, Timungpi managed to secure 777 marks in the mains exams, pointing to malpractices in the examination process.
The APSC scam, unearthed in 2013, involved the illegal manipulation of marks in the final tabulation sheet for the Combined Competitive Examination (CCE), leading to the improper appointment of candidates to various government posts. The inquiry into this corruption case has made substantial progress, resulting in the suspension of 21 officers, including 11 Assam Police Service (APS) officers, four Assam Civil Service (ACS) officers, and six officers from other services.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed under the chief minister’s directive, continues its rigorous efforts to bring all involved parties to justice. As part of the ongoing investigation, as many as six individuals have been arrested in connection with the cash-for-job scam. The state government has also initiated departmental proceedings against the implicated officers. Today’s appearance of Rumi Timungpi before the SIT marks another significant step in the pursuit of justice and accountability in the APSC scandal.
