Synod College Launches Entrepreneurship Centre to Ignite Youth Innovation in Meghalaya

Northeast Desk, 22nd August: In a landmark move to bolster innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth of Meghalaya, Synod College, Shillong, officially launched the Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Incubation Centre (EIIC-SYC) on August 21. The initiative aims to transform the region’s latent creativity into successful business ventures, marking a new chapter in the state’s economic development.

I Laloo, Executive Director of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) and PRIME Startup Hub, praised the abundant creativity within the state’s youth. “Meghalaya’s young people are brimming with innovative ideas. Our objective is to provide them with the skills and resources necessary to turn these ideas into thriving businesses,” Laloo stated during the launch.

Highlighting the role of EIIC-SYC, Laloo emphasized the centre’s mission to channel student creativity into sustainable business models. She also pointed out the government’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship through the CM Elevate programme, which offers up to 75% subsidies for promising business proposals.

In a keynote address, Prof Don Syiem underscored the importance of innovation in addressing the dynamic needs of society. He referenced the establishment of 20 Design Innovation Centres across India, including one at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), which boasts cutting-edge technologies like 3D printers and AI robotics to fuel student innovation.

E Thangkhiew, convenor of the Entrepreneurship Cell, outlined the centre’s objectives, which include organizing workshops, mentorship programs, and sustainability challenges. These initiatives are designed to engage the local community and create tailored responses to the

unique entrepreneurial needs of the region.

The event also featured the official launch of EIIC-SYC by Laloo and the recognition of Jason Wahlang, the winner of the Logo Design Competition, further highlighting the centre’s commitment to fostering local talent.

As EIIC-SYC opens its doors, it is set to play a crucial role in nurturing a new generation of entrepreneurs in Meghalaya, driving economic growth and innovation across the state.
