T20 WC: Australia’s Matthew Wade Tests COVID-19 Positive
Guwahati: Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade has tested positive for COVID-19 following Adam Zampa, the team’s spinner during their domestic ICC T20 World Cup 2022 campaign.
Wade is anticipated to play in his team’s key match against arch-rivals England on Friday at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), according to cricket.com.au, unless his condition worsens.
The 34-year-old, the club’s second wicketkeeper following Josh Inglis, who was sidelined due to injury has tested positive for the virus, according to a team official. Cameron Green, an all-around player also took over for Inglis. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell donned the keeping gloves and engaged in drills with assistant coach and former first-grade keeper Andre Borovec on Thursday during the nets practise, according to ANI.
David Warner would probably step into Wade’s shoes in his absence, according to Captain Aaron Finch. During the Big Bash League, Finch has also filled in as the backup wicketkeeper. But Wade will play, according to the hosts. However, they are worried that the virus won’t continue to spread.
This World Cup’s rules allow athletes who tested positive for COVID-19 to keep playing. Wade won’t be permitted to use the team’s locker room before or after the game since he must go separately to the stadium.
Zampa has resumed bowling in the nets following a string of unsuccessful tests, which is a clear sign that he will face England.
