Table Tennis Player Dies in Road Accident in Meghalaya

Guwahati: An 18-year-old table tennis player died in a road accident at Nongpoh in Meghalaya on Sunday.

The player was identified as Deenadayalan Vishwa who is a resident of Tamil Nadu.

The incident took place when his taxi was hit by a 12-wheel trailer coming in the opposite direction.

According to reports, Vishwa along with three other teammates was travelling by taxi from Guwahati to Shillong for the 83rd Senior National and Inter-State Table Tennis Championships.

However, the driver of the taxi died on the spot due to the accident.

Vishwa died on the way to Nongpoh Civil Hospital in Ri-Bhoi district where the doctors brought him dead, while the other players are now admitted at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Meghalaya.

The injured identified as Ramesh Santosh Kumar, Abinash Prasannaji Srinivasan and Kishore Kumar.

It needs to be noted that the teenager had won several junior, sub-junior and cadet titles in the country and abroad and his demise is a huge blow to the sport in India.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Union Minister Anurag Thakur have expressed condolences to the family of the late teenager.
