Taliban Row: Himanta Biswa Sarma thanks Muslims for helping Police

Guwahati: With the Taliban being one of the most discussed topics on social media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has thanked the Muslims of Assam for helping apprehend 15 persons across the state who were accused of supporting the Taliban on their social media handles.

The Chief Minister addressing the media said that he was happy to see that the Muslims of the state came forward without any hesitating and helped the Assam Police to arrest at least 15 persons who were “supporters” of the Taliban. The Chief Minister further stated that there were several persons on the watch list of the police but the police have arrested people who have posted things that were sensitive and could have led to communal tension in the state.

He added that keeping vigil in Assam is very important because the state has a varied demography. “We had counseled many people related to their posts on social media and many had understood the intensity of the situation. The people arrested were the ones on the extreme side”, he added.

The police so far have made at least 15 arrests in the state since the Taliban took over Afghanistan.
