Tamil Nadu: Rain-related Incidents Leave 2 Dead; Schools Shut in Several Districts

Guwahati: Two people were killed in rain-related incidents in Chennai of Tamil Nadu due to torrential rains that caused flooding in the city and its surroundings. A woman passed away after a wall fell, while one man was electrocuted.

The India Meteorological Department, or IMD, has issued heavy rainfall warnings for Chennai and the nearby districts of Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, according to India Today. However, the rain stopped on Wednesday morning.

Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga, two locations in districts located in the Cauvery delta zone, could also get significant rainfall. It is warned against fishermen going out to sea.

Meanwhile, the state government has declared a rain holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Thiruvallur and Ranipet. Schools and colleges will remain closed in Vellore, Kanjipuram, Vilupuram and Chengalpattu as well, as per news agency ANI.

Chennai recorded up to 126.1 mm of rain from 8.30 am yesterday until 5.30 am today.

The Regional Meteorological Centre predicted that Chennai will see heavy to very heavy rain on November 2 and that adjacent districts like Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu would experience the same in the following several days.

“Light to moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur at one or two places over Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Tirupattur, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Karaikal during the next three hours,” Chennai RMC said.

For the first time in three decades, Nungambakkam, a core city area, recorded 8 cm rainfall in a single day on Tuesday, and suburban Red Hills 13 cm, followed by 12 cm in Perambur, also in Chennai.
