Tears and Tributes Flow For Nipon Goswami, Following His Death

Guwahati: Veteran Assamese actor Nipon Goswami, who passed away early on Thursday while receiving treatment at the Nemcare hospital in Guwahati, laid with full state honours.

According to reports, Goswami breathed his last at the age of 80 at around 9.15 am. On October 24, he was admitted to the hospital where a skilled medical team was treating him and keeping an eye on his wellbeing. He had a cardiac arrest this morning and as a result he passed away.

Meanwhile, Nipon Goswami’s mortal remains will first be carried to his home from whenre it will be taken to Jyoti Chitrabon Film Studio at around 2 pm so that people can pay their tribute.

Thereafter, his body will be taken to Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra at around 9 am. Then his remains will be taken to Dighalipukhuri. At around 11 am tomorrow, his last rites will performed at the Nabagraha cemetery to be laid down for the last time.

Tributes have flooded in from all around the state since word of Nipon Goswami’s death spread. According to cabinet minister Ashok Singhal, who was speaking about him said that Nipon Goswami appeared in several films. He will live on forever even though he is gone.

He announced that the stalwart of the Assamese film industry will be laid with state honours. Singhal said, “I have come to meet with the family members. His hospital expenditure will be covered by the state government”.

Mourning his demise, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to write in Assamese, “I am pained to hear of Assamese film industry’s evergreen actor Nipon Goswami’s passing away. In my youth, while working for the film ‘Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati’, I had the chance of meeting him and I was blessed at the opportunity.”

“He played thoughtful characters in many Assamese films and his contribution to the cultural world will never be forgotten by the people of Assam. I pray to God for the eternal peace of the late actor and extend my condolences to the bereaved family,” added the Assam CM.

Eminent Indian writer Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi condoled the demise of the veteran actor. He said, “I have been left heartbroken after coming to know about Nipon Goswami’s passing away. He was my favourite actor. I have grown up watching all his movies. If he had wished, he could have stayed in Mumbai and acted in Bollywood films, but he came here and had a huge role in the growth of the Assamese film industry.”

Born in Tezpur, the 80-year-old actor stepped into the world of acting as a child artist by playing a role in the 1957 Assamese feature film ‘Pioli Phukan’ that was directed by Phani Sarma.

Goswami had also acted in several Assamese films like Shiraj, Deutar Biya, Priya O Priya, Kokadeutar Ghar Jowai, Aparupa, Sandhyaraag, Bohagor Duporiya, Ghar Khankar etc.
