Tensions Escalate at Lower Assam School Over Alleged Beef Incident

Guwahati, 25th September: Tensions erupted outside Carmel School in Andherijuli, Kamrup district, after allegations surfaced that two students from Manipur had served beef to their Hindu classmates during a tiffin break. The controversy, which occurred eight days earlier, sparked strong religious sentiments, leading to widespread protests that disrupted the ongoing half-yearly exams.

Hundreds of demonstrators, including local residents and guardians, gathered outside the school, demanding swift action against the two Class 8 students accused of the act. The situation was further aggravated by what the community perceived as inadequate action from the school administration.

A formal complaint, signed by 69 guardians, was submitted to the Palashbari Revenue Circle’s Circle Officer, accusing the students of offering beef to their Hindu peers on September 19. Frustration escalated after the school’s principal allegedly downplayed the situation, according to protestors.

DSP Kamrup (Rural) Rajiv Kumar Saikia confirmed that a case had been registered and an investigation was underway. Despite this, protestors claimed that the school administration failed to take corrective measures, leading to a larger demonstration.

Local authorities, including a police team and a magistrate, arrived to calm tensions and promised a thorough investigation. However, no formal charges have been filed, and the situation remains under close watch.
