Tensions Escalate in Assam as ULFA-I Seeks Clarity on Recent Shootouts

Guwahati, 25th December: In the northeastern Indian state of Assam, recent events have heightened tensions surrounding the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), an armed separatist group advocating for an independent sovereign nation for the indigenous Assamese people.

Police Firing Injures Youths Suspected of ULFA-I Ties

On December 24, four youths suspected of links to ULFA-I were injured in police firing, fueling the ongoing strife. The ULFA (I) has now demanded evidence from the police regarding the recent shootouts in Sadiya and Baihata, seeking clarification on the circumstances that led to these incidents.

ULFA (I) Challenges Police Narrative

In a press statement, the banned outfit refutes claims of involvement by the injured youths, emphasizing that they had no ties to ULFA (I) and did not maintain contact with any members. ULFA (I) insists that the state police provide clear evidence for each incident, warning of dire consequences if such evidence is not presented.

Appeal to Journalists for Objective Reporting

Simultaneously, ULFA (I) calls on journalists in Assam not to rely solely on police statements but to seek the truth from the injured youths. The group questions the credibility of the police narrative and urges media professionals to independently investigate the incidents.

Decades-Long Conflict Reignites

Founded on April 7, 1979, ULFA (I) has been engaged in the Assam conflict, seeking autonomy for the region. Recent clashes between the Assam Police and ULFA (I) members have reignited the long-standing dispute.

Heated Exchange Between Police and ULFA-I Leadership

Adding to the tension, a confrontation between Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh and ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah has unfolded. The DGP’s warning against supporting the outlawed organization, coupled with the caution against social media posts in support, has intensified the standoff.

Demands for Evidence Amidst a Fragile Peace

As Assam’s state police actively work to restore peace, ULFA (I) continues to demand clear evidence from the authorities regarding the incidents in Sadiya and Baihata. The situation remains precarious, with both sides holding firm to their positions on Assam’s independence.
