Tensions Rise in Dima Hasao as BJP Eyes Victory in Upcoming Autonomous Council Election
Guwahati, 28th December: A significant political development is underway in the tranquil hills of Assam’s Dima Hasao district as preparations intensify for the 13th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council election. Expressing unwavering confidence, Assam cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika anticipates a victory, aiming to secure 26 out of 28 constituencies in this crucial local government election.
Hazarika boldly stated, “I think we will win all the 22 constituencies…if not, we may not perform well in one or two constituencies.” Notably, six BJP candidates, including Manjit Naiding, Mohit Hojai, Prajit Hojai, Amendu Hojai, Najit Kempra, and an unnamed candidate, emerged victorious without facing any opposition in the pre-election phase.
Emphasizing the party’s stronghold, Hazarika revealed Assam CM’s three-day visit to Dima Hasao before the January 3 polls. The minister attributes the growing support to ongoing developmental initiatives in the region.
Despite the optimistic political climate, the shadow of violence looms over the election. Hazarika condemned the recent act of violence in Sekhkhar constituency, urging people to live in peace and harmony. The incident resulted in two serious injuries during an attack on independent candidate Hirojit Zidong’s workers.
In Semkhar constituency, vehicles and motorcycles of independent candidate Hirojit Zidong were vandalized, and two workers were attacked with sharp weapons, leading to severe injuries. The victims, Riden Haflongbar and Prakash Fonglo, are currently hospitalized in Maibang. Police have been dispatched to the scene, investigating the incident.
Hirojit Zidong alleges that the attack occurred during a puja held by BJP candidate Ranu Langthasa in Semkhar constituency. He accuses former members of the DNLA militant outfit, Pradao, Ringmao Boro, and Phoolan Fanglo, of assaulting his workers during the BJP candidate’s puja, resulting in two serious injuries.
As political fervor heightens in Dima Hasao, the confluence of optimistic electoral expectations and incidents of violence creates a complex backdrop as the region approaches the autonomous council election.
