Tenure of Intelligence Bureau Chief Tapan Kumar Deka Extended Until June 2025

National Desk, 25th June: On Monday, June 24, the central government announced the extension of Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Tapan Kumar Deka’s tenure by one year, extending his service until June 2025.

Tapan Kumar Deka, a 1998-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has been serving as the IB director. This extension underscores his commendable performance over the past two years in this critical role.

The decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy of retaining key security team members, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, as he embarks on his historic third term.

Deka has dedicated most of his career to the Intelligence Bureau, ascending from Additional Director to Special Director in June of the previous year. His extensive experience in counter-terrorism has been crucial in numerous high-profile operations.

As operations joint director, Deka played a vital role in dismantling the Indian Mujahideen’s terror network within India. His leadership was instrumental during major incidents, including the 2015–16 Pathankot air base attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack.

Deka has also been deeply involved in addressing terrorism-related issues in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly focusing on targeted killings in the Valley.

The extension of Tapan Kumar Deka’s tenure is viewed as a strategic move to ensure continuity and stability in India’s intelligence operations amidst ongoing security challenges.
