Thailand Monks Sent To Rehab

Guwahati: The authorities in Southeast Asia have reported multiple “Methamphetamine” seizures in recent years.Thailand known for its Buddhist temples gives patients free rehabilitation programmes and specialises in treating drug addiction but due to an incident some of the country’s monasteries were left without monks.

According to a report, a temple in the Bung Sam Phan district of the province of Phetchabun has been devoid of monks after all of its holy men failed a drug test and tested positive for consumption of “Methamphetamine.”

District official “Boonlert Thintapthai” commented on the predicament to AFP, saying, “The temple is now empty of monks and nearby villagers are worried they cannot do any merit-making.”

According to reports from the UN office on drugs and crime, Thailand is listed as a major country for “methamphetamine” drug transit. On Thailand’s streets, pills can be bought for less than 20 baht.

Boonlert Thintapthai declares that additional clergy will be appointed to the temple because part of the merit ritual entails worshipers giving food to monks in exchange for their good deeds.

Meanwhile, four monks including an abbot from the Bung Sam Phan temple in the rural area appplied for drug tests on Monday and tested posituive and had “methamphetamine.”
