Thousands of ‘illegal’ Encroachers Attack Villagers in Assam’s Barpeta; Many injured
Guwahati: Tensions erupted in lower Assam’s Barpeta district after a large group of suspected illegal encroachers allegedly attacked residents near Senga area on Wednesday.
According to reports, five people were seriously injured and are receiving treatment at the Barpeta Medical College Hospital, many more were harmed in the incident.
As per the victims, over 2000 persons attacked them with sharp weapons such as machetes, swords, axes, and lathis.
“These (assailants) are a group of encroachers who have been living in the area for the past two years.” They are undocumented immigrants. They have organised gambling in the region during the Eid celebrations. When a few residents of the village objected, over 2000 people arrived with sharp weapons and thrashed everyone in the vicinity, according to locals.
Reportedly, during the incident, several women and children were seriously injured. Police were alerted to control the situation later.
However, no one was arrested until this complaint was filed.
Locals have petitioned Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take strong action against the unlawful encroachers, claiming that local police had taken no action against them. They further stated that the unauthorised colony was involved in anti-national activities.
