Three Insurgent Cadres Arrested in Manipur for Running Extortion Rackets and Admission Scams
Imphal: In a series of coordinated operations aimed at curbing militant-linked extortion in Manipur, police have arrested three active insurgent cadres engaged in widespread illegal activities across the state. The arrests, confirmed by officials on Monday, underscore a growing nexus between insurgent groups and organized financial exploitation, including a disturbing new trend of promising backdoor admissions to educational institutions in exchange for cash.
The most prominent arrest occurred on May 24 when Md. Sadam, a 31-year-old active member of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Taibangnganba), was detained by security forces in the Yaingangpokpi area of Imphal East. A resident of Kwakta Khuman in Bishnupur District, Sadam was later formally arrested at Thoubal District Headquarters. Investigations revealed that he was operating an elaborate scam targeting parents desperate to secure school and college admissions for their children, using promises of illegal “guaranteed” placements in the valley. Police seized multiple identity cards, SIM cards, and mobile phones during the arrest.
In a separate operation that same day, Nambram Amujao Singh, alias Lanngakpa, a 25-year-old cadre of the United National Liberation Front (Pambei), was apprehended near the Koireng statue on Moirang Sendra Road in Bishnupur District. Originally from Churachandpur District, Singh had been staying at the Moirang College Relief Camp while carrying out extortion activities targeting businesses, government offices, and civilians across Bishnupur and Imphal.
The crackdown continued on May 25 with the arrest of Wahengbam Isriel Singh, also known as Chalamba, a 47-year-old KCP cadre from Patsoi Part-I in Imphal West. He too was actively engaged in extortion, with police recovering two mobile phones and SIM cards from his possession.
Authorities have placed all three suspects in custody as investigations expand to trace their wider networks and collaborators. The arrests mark a significant step in disrupting extortion-linked insurgent operations that have increasingly preyed upon both the public and private sectors in the region.
