Tipra Motha Threatens Withdrawal of Support from BJP in Tripura Over Unmet Demands

Agartala: In a significant development that could reshape Tripura’s political landscape, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) is considering withdrawing its support from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if its demands, primarily concerning the implementation of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directives against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and the introduction of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill, are not addressed. This strong stance was articulated by MLA Ranjit Debbarma during a press conference held today, July 5.

Debbarma announced that a non-political rally will be organised on July 7 to press for the implementation of the MHA notification regarding illegal immigrants. He lamented the Tripura government’s apparent inaction on this critical issue, highlighting that states like Gujarat, Delhi, and Assam have already initiated steps based on the MHA directives. He specifically pointed out that the MHA notification mandates the detention of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants within 30 days, the formation of a Special Task Force, and identification by Police SPs—none of which, he claimed, have been adequately implemented in Tripura. Debbarma further stated that they had met with Gomati and Sepahijala District Magistrates, but no concrete action has been reported yet, despite illegal Bangladeshis reportedly residing in many areas of Agartala city. He also cited the example of Tamil Nadu, which formed a Special Task Force for similar issues.

The MLA revealed that he had a discussion this morning with royal scion and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya, who expressed the party’s readiness to withdraw support from the government. Debbarma also indicated that MP Kriti Devi Singh is “almost ready to quit BJP.” He mentioned a crucial meeting scheduled for July 30, where the final decision regarding their continued alliance would be made. Debbarma underscored the party’s frustration, stating that both the state and central governments have failed to fulfil their demands, including holding Village Council elections and introducing the 125th Amendment. He confirmed that all 13 Tipra Motha MLAs are united and plan to take up these concerns with the Centre.
