TMC leader Ripun Bora on child marriage: Assam Police is puppet of CM Sarma’s game

Guwahati: Assam Trinamool Congress leader Ripun Bora criticised the state government for the extensive persecution of thousands of people in the wake of the huge campaign against child marriage.

The TMC leader also alleged in a letter to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court that the Assam government’s arbitrary crackdown on alleged offenders of the 2006 Child Marriage Act amounted to a serious abuse of the law and a violation of human rights.

The TMC leader outlined a few facts and circumstances while asking the Gauhati High Court to get involved.

According to the TMC leader, Assam police across the state have been conducting a crackdown on alleged offenders of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 for the past three days on the orders of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Ripun Bora alleges that while doing this, Assam police arbitrarily detained thousands of alleged criminals without a valid FIR or supporting documentation, despite detaining or prosecuting the immediate offenders.

The TMC leader further claimed the state government neglected to educate the public about the Act, and Assam Police arbitrarily detained thousands of people, even those who had recently married and whose wives were now completely adult.

The TMC leader stated in the letter that the alleged criminals were only detained based on a simple police report and not on a formal report from any victim or member of the victim’s family to further emphasise a point.

Ripum Bora, who was asking the Gauhati High Court for help, questioned why the state police were simply following the Chief Minister’s orders without following any legal procedure and why they were turning into puppets in the Chief Minister’s game by arbitrarily detaining thousands of people over the course of a single night.

In the letter, the TMC leader pleaded with the Gauhati High Court to step in and stop the Assam Government from engaging in such unlawful and inhumane behaviour.
