TMC Leader Sagarika Ghose Criticizes Manipur CM Over Comments on Mamata Banerjee
Northeast Desk, 30th August: Trinamool Congress leader Sagarika Ghose has criticized Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for his remarks on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s handling of protests following the tragic rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital. Ghose asserted that Singh lacks the “moral authority” to critique Banerjee, given the dire situation in his own state.
Singh had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with Banerjee’s initial response to the incident, accusing her of prioritizing rallies over taking immediate action. In an interview with PTI, he stated that her approach had not impressed many.
Responding to Singh’s comments, Ghose pointed out the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, where over 220 people have lost their lives, and thousands remain displaced in relief camps. She highlighted that the Kolkata Police swiftly resolved the murder case within 24 hours, contrasting it with Manipur’s situation, where police allegedly delayed filing FIRs for months.
Ghose further criticized Singh for failing to provide hope and relief to the people of Manipur over the last 18 months, accusing the BJP of exploiting rape cases for political gains. She emphasized that the situation in Manipur, where ethnic violence has persisted since May 3, 2023, reflects poorly on Singh’s leadership.
The violence in Manipur began following a tribal solidarity march protesting the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of over 220 individuals, including security personnel, and continues to plague the state.
