TMC MP Sushmita Dev Slams BJP Over Manipur Crisis Following CM’s Resignation

Imphal: Following the resignation of N. Biren Singh as the Chief Minister of Manipur, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sushmita Dev launched a scathing attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of inaction and failure in handling the state’s crisis.

She alleged that the government, which claims to be “of the people and for the people,” simply watched the turmoil unfold because it could not face the “inconvenient truth.”

Directing her criticism at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Rajya Sabha MP questioned the timing of Biren Singh’s resignation, asserting that if Shah had the authority to remove him now, he could have taken action a year ago when the situation in Manipur was rapidly deteriorating.

In a strongly worded statement, Dev accused the BJP government of remaining silent despite rampant violence, arson, sexual crimes against women, and the killing of children. She alleged that the state, under BJP rule, had effectively lost all constitutional rights, leaving the people in distress.

Dev further slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pointing out that he never visited Manipur amid the crisis, while Biren Singh remained in power despite being complicit in the chaos. She contrasted BJP’s inaction with AITC’s proactive approach, stating that Trinamool Congress was the first party to send a delegation of MPs to Manipur and consistently raised the issue in Parliament.

Criticizing Amit Shah for acting too late, she stated that the damage had already been done to what was once a peaceful state. She added that the handling of the Manipur crisis would be remembered as a dark chapter in India’s history.

As she continued to target the ruling party, Dev demanded an apology from PM Modi, stating that his failure to visit Manipur even once was unacceptable. She dismissed Biren Singh’s resignation as an insignificant gesture, stating that “it is just a drop in the ocean,” and urged the government to take real steps to restore normalcy in Manipur.

Emphasizing the need for continued pressure from the Opposition, Dev called on political parties to ensure the government takes accountability and implements long-term solutions to end the unrest. She also criticized the lack of transparency in the inquiry commission, stating that “no one knows about the report or its findings.” She demanded a thorough investigation to determine how the constitutional machinery failed and who should be held responsible.

The political fallout following Biren Singh’s resignation continues to escalate, with Opposition leaders vowing to keep the Manipur crisis at the forefront of national discourse.
