Top Intelligence Officer Reviews Security Situation in Tripura’s Unakoti Following Protest Clashes

Kailashahar, Unakoti: Director General (Intelligence) Anurag Dhankar conducted a visit to the Kailashahar subdivision in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Sunday, a day after tensions flared following a confrontation between law enforcement and demonstrators. The visit underscores the administration’s focus on maintaining peace in the region.

The unrest originated on Saturday, April 12, in Kubjhar village when a protest rally advocating for the revocation of the Waqf Amendment Bill was halted by security personnel. The situation escalated rapidly, with reports indicating that protestors resorted to throwing stones and bricks at the police, who subsequently employed necessary measures to disperse the gathering.

The clash resulted in injuries on both sides, affecting members of the police force and the demonstrating individuals. In response to the incident, the Tripura Police took swift action, apprehending eight individuals believed to be connected to the disruption.

In the wake of the Saturday incident, a significant security presence has been established throughout Kailashahar. This heightened deployment aims to deter any potential recurrence of violence and ensure the safety and security of the local populace.

DG (Intelligence) Anurag Dhankar’s arrival in Kailashahar from Agartala on Sunday evening was followed by an immediate visit to the Kailashahar Police Station. There, he convened a crucial high-level review meeting that spanned from 4 PM to 6:30 PM in the chamber of the Officer-in-Charge. The meeting saw the participation of key officials including DIG (Northern Range) Rati Ranjan Debnath and Unakoti SP Sudhambika R, along with other senior authorities.

While DG Dhankar chose not to address the media directly, DIG Debnath provided assurances to reporters regarding the prevailing conditions in Kailashahar and the wider Unakoti district. He stated that the area has remained tranquil since the reported clashes.

“No further untoward incidents have been reported. People in this district are peace-loving and prefer harmony,” DIG Debnath affirmed, emphasizing the community’s desire for stability.

Furthermore, DIG Debnath clarified that the DG’s visit was part of a scheduled routine review, particularly in light of upcoming festivities such as Chaitra Sankranti and Poila Boishakh. These events typically attract large congregations, necessitating increased vigilance and security preparedness.

According to police sources, during the review meeting, DG Dhankar specifically requested a comprehensive report on the events of April 12 from SP Sudhambika R. He also inquired about the well-being of the injured police personnel and issued directives to ensure they receive appropriate medical attention.
