Tough Stance Against Drug Nexus: Meghalaya Houseowners Face Prosecution

Shillong – Meghalaya’s Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) has issued a stern warning to property owners across the state: those whose premises are found to be used by drug traffickers will face legal action. The advisory, aimed at curbing the rising tide of drug-related activities, underscores a significant shift in the state’s anti-drug strategy, placing greater onus on property owners to ensure their assets are not misused.

In a public statement, Giri Prasad, the ANTF chief and Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills, reiterated the severe implications under Section 25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He clarified that knowingly permitting one’s property or vehicle to be utilised for drug trafficking constitutes an offence “equivalent to direct involvement in the crime,” carrying heavy penalties. The SP urged all house and vehicle owners who rent out their assets to immediately report any suspicion of drug trafficking or other NDPS Act-punishable activities to the nearest police station or the State ANTF office. This proactive measure by the authorities comes amidst growing concerns about individuals inadvertently or negligently becoming enablers of drug networks by leasing their properties without adequate due diligence. The police have appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and act with responsibility to prevent the misuse of their valuable assets, thereby strengthening the state’s ongoing anti-drug campaign.
