Tragic End Over Ten Rupees: Labourer Dies After Alleged Assault in Jagiroad
Guwahati: A petty argument over a packet of biscuits, valued at a mere ten rupees, has tragically claimed the life of a 42-year-old daily wage labourer in Jagiroad, Assam. The deceased has been identified as Raju Harijan, a resident of Ghunucha Habi village.
According to reports, the fatal incident unfolded on the evening of April 7th. Raju Harijan had been engaged by Kundal Deori, hailing from Kanabori village, for the task of constructing a boundary fence. Following a day’s labor, Deori reportedly gave Harijan ten rupees intended for tea and biscuits. However, Harijan is said to have requested double the amount, leading to a heated exchange between the two men.
The verbal altercation swiftly spiraled into physical violence. Allegations suggest that Kundal Deori repeatedly assaulted Raju Harijan, inflicting grievous injuries that rendered the laborer unconscious.
In a shocking turn of events, instead of seeking immediate medical attention for the severely injured Harijan, Deori allegedly placed him in an e-rickshaw and dispatched him home in a semi-conscious state. Upon discovering his critical condition, Harijan’s family members urgently transported him to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Tragically, despite their efforts, Raju Harijan succumbed to his injuries on April 11th.
The grieving family has further alleged that Kundal Deori remained unresponsive and offered no assistance despite being informed of the victim’s dire state. In a powerful display of grief and demand for justice, the deceased’s family and relatives arrived at the Jagiroad police station on Friday night accompanied by the body, insisting on the immediate arrest and stringent legal action against Deori.
This deeply disturbing incident has ignited widespread condemnation within the local community. It has sparked serious concerns regarding the escalating insensitivity and brutality prevalent in society. Social activists and local residents are vehemently demanding swift justice for the deceased and are urging authorities to implement more robust measures to prevent such senseless acts of violence over trivial matters.
