Trekker Goes Missing on Goecha La Trail in Sikkim, Search Operations Underway
Gangtok: A high-altitude search operation is currently underway in West Sikkim after Sandeep Roy, a trekker from Kadamtala, Ranidunga, went missing along the popular yet challenging Goecha La trail. Roy was last seen on April 21 near Thangsing, a major stop on the route, raising concerns about his safety amid unpredictable mountain weather and treacherous terrain.
Part of an eight-member trekking group, Roy had reportedly fallen behind when he disappeared, prompting immediate concern among his fellow trekkers. The Goecha La trail, known for its steep ascents and dense forests, is particularly unforgiving for those who stray from the group.
Local authorities, police teams, and volunteers from nearby villages have launched an extensive search despite adverse weather conditions hampering visibility and slowing progress. The rough landscape and high altitude have made the operation especially difficult.
The remaining members of the group are expected to reach Yuksom, the trail’s base point, later today and are likely to provide investigators with critical insights into the events leading up to Roy’s disappearance.
Officials have once again urged trekkers in the region to stay vigilant, avoid hiking alone, and ensure constant communication while navigating remote stretches of the trail. More updates on the situation are awaited.
