Tripura: 5-yr-old elephant hit by train in Teliamura, dies

Northeast Desk, 10th February: A 5-year-old male elephant lost his life after being allegedly hit by a train in Teliamura, located in the Khowai District of Tripura.

The incident occurred early in the morning, and forest officials suspect that the Kanchanjunga Express was involved.

The railway track, constructed in 2008, traverses through an elephant corridor, a route frequented by a herd of 17 elephants in the area.

The collision highlights the persistent challenge faced by wildlife in regions intersected by human infrastructure.

“Considering the age of the elephant, we presume it was likely trailing behind the rest of the herd. Postmortem procedures are currently underway,” shared a forest official, indicating ongoing efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

This unfortunate incident underscores the pressing need for measures to prevent such incidents in the future, especially in areas where human activities intersect with wildlife habitats. The construction of the railway track within the elephant corridor raises significant concerns regarding the safety of these majestic animals.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance required for the coexistence of wildlife and human development. Authorities are urged to reassess and implement strategies that prioritize the protection of both wildlife and human interests. Further investigations are anticipated to provide insights into the specifics of this distressing incident.
