Tripura: Accused in Viral Auto Harassment Case Arrested Within 12 Hours in Agartala

Agartala: In a swift response, Tripura Police arrested Shayamal Das, the man accused of sexually harassing a female student inside an auto-rickshaw in Agartala, within 12 hours of the FIR being filed. The arrest was made early Thursday morning, April 17, from the Battala Market area.

Swasati Das, Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Women Police Station, confirmed the development, stating, “An FIR was filed yesterday accusing a man of sexually assaulting a girl. We have also reviewed the video footage. Soon after the FIR was lodged, we launched a manhunt.”

The accused, identified as a resident of Udaipur in Gomati District, is set to be produced before the court today.

The case drew widespread public attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The video, reportedly recorded by the victim herself, shows the man inappropriately touching her during a ride from GB Bazar to Battala.

The matter gained momentum after Tripura royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma raised the issue on Facebook and directed the Youth Tipra Federation to coordinate with police for swift action.

Outrage continues to pour in online, with youth across Tripura—both girls and boys—demanding exemplary punishment to ensure women’s safety in public spaces.
