Tripura: Assam Rifles Initiates Rescue Operations Amidst Severe Flooding

Northeast Desk, August 21, 2024In response to the severe flooding caused by incessant rains in Tripura, the Assam Rifles have launched extensive relief and rescue operations in the districts of Unakoti and Gomati. The operations, which began on the night of August 20, were initiated following a request from the civil administration as landslides and rising water levels threatened communities in East Kanchanbari, Karbook, and Amarpur.

Two columns, comprising 2 Officers, 4 JCOs, and 70 soldiers, were swiftly deployed to assist in flood relief efforts. The continuous downpour over the past 72 hours has resulted in hundreds of homes being submerged, especially in the state’s periphery. The situation has been exacerbated by the swelling of six major rivers—Haora, Karki, Dhalai, Manu, Muhuri, and Gomti—which are all flowing above the danger mark.

As of now, 5,607 families have been relocated to 183 relief camps set up across the state to manage the escalating crisis.

Staying true to its tradition of being the first responder during natural disasters, Assam Rifles has once again stepped up to lead the rescue efforts, working tirelessly to safeguard the lives of those affected by the devastating floods in Tripura.
