Tripura Authorities Deploy 135 Tankers to Tackle Drinking Water Crisis in 313 Settlements Amid Heat Wave
Northeast Desk, 30th April: Amidst a challenging heat wave exacerbated by a lack of rainfall, Tripura’s Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has mobilized resources to address a pressing drinking water shortage affecting 313 highly sensitive settlements. The state government’s response, prompted by the gravity of the situation, includes deploying 135 tankers to ensure communities receive essential water supplies.
A comprehensive report from the Tripura Government highlighted the urgent need to address the water crisis, primarily affecting hilly areas due to dwindling water sources. To devise effective solutions, a meeting was convened in Agartala, led by Abhishek Singh, Secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
In attendance were key officials including the Chief Engineer, Additional Chief Engineer, Superintendent Inspector, and Executive Inspectors from various districts. The meeting underscored the critical importance of maintaining and accelerating drinking water supply projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Secretary Abhishek Singh emphasized proactive measures to ensure the functionality of water projects, especially in settlements with high drinking water demand. The deployment of tankers to these areas was deemed necessary to meet immediate needs and prevent further crisis escalation.
Residents facing water shortages were encouraged to seek assistance through the toll-free helpline or by contacting local Drinking Water and Sanitation Offices. The government assured ongoing efforts to increase water supply through tankers as needed.
Furthermore, efforts were outlined to disinfect water sources and provide safe drinking water, with stringent monitoring and testing protocols in place. Immediate notification of any waterborne disease outbreaks was urged for prompt intervention.
In a collaborative effort, Tripura State Electricity Corporation (TSECL) and Tripura Renewal Energy Development Agency (TREDA) officials were directed to expedite electricity connections to pending water supply projects. These measures aim to alleviate the water crisis and ensure the well-being of affected communities across Tripura.
